There are limited interactions between the art and the audience when art is on paper and fabric. With the increasing use of technology in art, artists are allowed to create more engaging experiences with their audience through their art. Campbell discussed the concept of art and its relationship with computers, as well as the future directions of interactive art.
While more artists have been contributing to the field of interactive art, the use of computers in art is still limited. According to Campbell, “an artist is forced to transform a concept an emotion or an intuition into a logical representation.” Although we move from pen and paper, current technology still has limitations that could limit artists’ creativity. I found it interesting when the author compared interactive art with games. Campbell seems to look at art as an abstract experience, while games are more logical. In my opinion, they are not only different in terms of experiences but also in the purposes of creation.
While most artists create art to share a message, game developers create a game to interact with players. Because most games come with a goal, they are more user-centered thus providing a stronger sense of interaction. From this point, I wonder how artists have to weight between creating an engaging experience for their audience and following their creative impulses.
